City University London's vision to create a new Strategic Learning Environment (SLE) which delivers a core set of educational tools for all but has the flexibility to meet individual requirements has driven its decision, made by a community of stakeholders, to migrate to Moodle.

Instructional Support Services at NC State University offers a wide spectrum of faculty support services, including a learning technology helpdesk, instructional housecalls, workshops, and collaborative course development. Since 2008 we have been using these services to evaluate Moodle and then plan for migration of instructors from Blackboard Vista to Moodle.

When we talk about elearning in Austria we are actually talking about blended learning scenarios. Starting from an early age we are looking for motivational factors to encourage students to use new tools and find attractive ways towards learning. Teachers become mentors that guide students and provide them with assignments within the ecool‐concept. There is an emphasis on didactical collaborative methods, eportfolio‐work, individualization and reflection of student’s work.

The idea of a “free” Learning Management System may be quite compelling to campuses interested in reducing costs; however, it’s not that simple. Learn how NC State University is moving to Moodle as an open source solution where resources are redirected to give our campus flexibility and control. If there are other institutions interested in very similar open source LMS topics for a panel discussion, we would be interested in participating in that in lieu of, or in addition to, a lecture-style presentation, if appropriate.

Moodle and Emerging Learning Environments

Framing the direction of Moodle research: A review of scholarly literature.

Sherry’s (1996) categorization system for distance education was used in this study to organize existing research available through five prominent scholarly databases. Analysis shows that pedagogical themes such as strategies to increase interactivity and active learning dominate the literature and the methods are largely descriptive.
