Day 1

Accessibility legislation: A catalyst for inclusive and competitive education

Accessibility legislation is transforming the global educational landscape. Laws and directives such as the European Accessibility Act (EAA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations 2018 set critical standards to ensure that education is accessible to all learners. These frameworks, however, are not just mandates—they provide a pathway to create more inclusive learning environments, improve learner outcomes, and enhance the global reputation of educational institutions.

We will showcase excerpts from our webinar with leading accessibility experts from the European Commission, European EdTech Alliance, EdTech Italia and more, who address key questions, such as:

  • Who is responsible? From publishers and LMS providers like Moodle, to content creators and EdTech companies, accessibility is a shared responsibility that requires collaboration across the entire ecosystem.
  • What are the risks of non-compliance? Understand the potential ramifications, common pitfalls, and red flags that can leave organisations vulnerable.
  • How can compliance be a strategic advantage? Learn how accessibility can attract funding, meet procurement requirements, and position institutions as leaders in inclusivity.

We will delve into practical strategies to prepare for and implement accessibility standards such as WCAG 2.2 AA, ensuring that platforms like Moodle and the content hosted on them are fully accessible. This includes leveraging text-to-speech (TTS) solutions to make digital learning content more inclusive and engaging. TTS tools empower learners with diverse needs, such as those with dyslexia, visual impairments, or language barriers, by enabling them to access content in their preferred format, enhancing comprehension and autonomy.

Through real-world examples, we will showcase how EdTech tools with accessibility features, like TTS integrated into Moodle, can improve learner outcomes.

Beyond compliance, this session reframes accessibility as a powerful competitive tool. By embedding accessibility into educational design from the outset, institutions can not only meet legal standards but also future-proof their offerings in an increasingly globalised education market.

Attendees will leave with actionable insights into leveraging accessibility legislation to create more inclusive educational environments, foster collaboration among stakeholders, and unlock new opportunities. Accessibility is not just about meeting legal requirements, it’s about embracing the chance to transform education for everyone.
