Day 3

Using Moodle competency frameworks to support graduate success

At Queen Mary University of London, we’ve developed a practical approach to embedding graduate attributes into the student experience through the use of Moodle’s native competency frameworks. Our aim is to help students better recognise and reflect on the skills and knowledge needed to thrive as global citizens, guided by our Queen Mary Graduate Attributes.

In 2024, we partnered with Moodle experts Catalyst IT to explore technical solutions that would make these attributes more visible and meaningful. Rather than building something entirely new, we returned to Moodle’s core tools – competency frameworks and learning plans – to create a streamlined, scalable solution.

Our pilot, launching September 2025, will test the framework in selected modules, gathering feedback from both students and staff. Early results show how the tool helps students connect academic learning with employability skills, giving them a clearer sense of their progress and potential.

This session will share what we’ve learned so far and what’s next. Attendees will leave with:

  • Templates and examples of how to build graduate attribute frameworks within Moodle
  • Recommendations on key plugins that support a minimum viable product (MVP)
  • Practical lessons from piloting the tool in live modules
  • A roadmap for rolling out similar approaches in other institutions

While grounded in Moodle, this session speaks to a broader challenge in higher education and workplace learning: how to make graduate attributes and transferable skills more tangible and actionable. By aligning institutional goals with accessible technology, we’re opening up new ways for students to track, understand and take ownership of their development – something every learner and educator can value.
