Bringing European history to life with Moodle: A free, multilingual, multimedia approach to learner engagement

How do you design an engaging, multilingual, privacy-conscious digital learning experience that works equally well for a 14-year-old in Lisbon and a civics class in Helsinki? For the House of European History, in partnership with Avetica, the answer was HistoriCall—a Moodle-powered platform offering an innovative methodology that connects European history to today’s challenges.

This presentation explores how we built HistoriCall to meet the needs of modern learners and educators across Europe. Available in all 24 official EU languages, the platform ensures every learner, regardless of location or language, has access to the same high-quality experience. Historical content is delivered through a modern format that reflects how people engage with information today.

The Visible Thinking method formed the foundation of HistoriCall’s pedagogy. By placing student questions at the centre and promoting multi-perspectivity, it encourages learners to explore diverse viewpoints and reflect critically on the past. This approach informed both the structure and flow of the content, guiding students through a clear, inquiry-based path using age-appropriate, trustworthy multimedia content to support the learning journey.

Rather than viewing EUDPR restrictions—such as the EU prohibition on collecting personal data from learners under 16—as a barrier, we treated them as a catalyst for innovation. HistoriCall includes anonymous learner tracking and teacher dashboards that support feedback and integration into the classroom while fully protecting student privacy.

Attendees will leave with practical inspiration for anyone looking to create learning that is engaging, well-designed, and grounded in a clear pedagogical vision. You’ll see how Moodle Core features, selected community plugins, and targeted custom development were combined to support meaningful learning, while remaining scalable and adaptable.
