Day 2

Scaling school leadership training through app-based Moodle learning in Kenya’s junior secondary schools

This presentation will share the practical experiences and lessons learned by Edutab Africa’s team from the collaboration with VVOB and the Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI) in implementing the INCREASE project, a national initiative aimed at strengthening instructional leadership in junior secondary schools through blended, app-based learning across the country.

Beyond the Moodle community, this session speaks directly to the broader educational technology and policy implementation demographics as it explores how localized instructional design, contextual digital tools, and capacity-building interventions can bridge the gap between curriculum reform and classroom practice particularly in low-resource settings. The Kenyan case offers relevant insights for education ministries, NGOs, and EdTech practitioners working in policy-aligned teacher development programmes.

Our approach emphasizes sustainability, co-ownership, and institutional strengthening which are cornerstones of successful digital transformation in education systems. The methods and insights shared will be immediately applicable and adaptable whether one is building digital infrastructure, designing national courses, or preparing educators for pedagogical shifts at a national scale.

Attendees will leave with concrete examples of:

  • How to set up and support Moodle LMS implementations for government initiatives.
  • Strategies for delivery of blended learning programmes with and for government initiatives.
  • A replicable framework for co-creating competency-based professional development content such as the ESL4JSS course.
  • Effective approaches for training government institutional ICT teams and educators in using new digital learning environments.
  • Capacity-building strategies for scalable content development within government institutions.
