Interactive fiction and micro-simulations: Integrating Twine gamebooks in Moodle for engaging learning experiences

Gamebooks and other forms of interactive fiction—including micro-simulations—can be powerful tools for conveying knowledge and promoting engagement with (micro)learning content. By leveraging mechanisms such as self-determination, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, these narrative-driven formats support not only the acquisition of knowledge but also foster creativity, problem-solving, and social-emotional skills.

Using the open-source software Twine, educators and learners alike can create digital gamebooks and branching scenarios with varying degrees of complexity. These interactive stories can be exported as .html files and run on any internet-enabled device. With basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, and an openness to learning fundamental programming concepts (e.g., variables, conditionals, loops), anyone can become an author of immersive and educational interactive experiences.

To bridge Twine with Moodle, Think Modular has developed a plugin that enables the import of Twine stories directly into Moodle courses. The plugin allows for the transfer of learners’ choices, scores, and automated feedback back into the Moodle gradebook—making these narrative experiences not only engaging but trackable and assessable.
