Gold Sponsors Q&A with Catalyst

Let’s get to know one of our sponsors and Moodle Partner in the UK, who are also Gold Sponsors for our #MootIEUK18, Catalyst, with General Manager, Joey Murison.

Let’s have a chat to Joey for more information and insight!

Moodle HQ:
Joey, for those unfamiliar with Catalyst’s work and services as a Certified Moodle Partner, would you be able to please provide a bit of a background?

Joey:
Catalyst Europe is part of a global team of Open Source specialists (Catalyst Group) based in offices in Brighton UK, Australia and New Zealand. We are passionate about the furthering of Open Source solutions and have been working with Moodle LMS since 2002.

Catalyst’s relationship with the Moodle system began in 2002 when, after careful market analysis, we selected it to form a new foundation for eLearning at the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand. In doing so, we scaled the nascent Open Source project to support the online studies of up to 40,000 students. For a period we also took over the Moodle project’s release management, providing stable governance for a key period in the community’s history. This investment in time and effort contributed significantly to the foundation of what is now the world’s most widely implemented Learning Management System.

Our UK based operation has a specific focus on supporting Mission Critical and enterprise grade Moodle LMS platforms. In particular, Catalyst EU delivers services targetted at the University and Further Education clients. Many enterprise grade clients are seeking to realise the  benefits of a private cloud infrastructure to host thier Moodle LMS systems and wider integrated components of the VLE or the organisation’s digital tools set.

A private Cloud service, fully managed by us at Catalyst Europe is particularly interesting for the University and Further Education sector, our fully managed private cloud Moodle service delivers exceptional performance to cost and our passionate belief in enabling our clients with the freedom to innovate means we welcome our clients furthering the system by adding community and custom developed plugins to the Moodle code base. In addition, our service offering includes 24/7 incident support, extensive expertise in global delivery and performance optimisation.

Moodle HQ:
What can Moodlers expect or look forward to from Catalyst’s presence at the upcoming MoodleMoot UK & Ireland 2018 in Glasgow?

Joey:
Catalyst have a full range of experts available at the Moodlemoot 2018, including:

  1. Software Developers (able to discuss custom feature or development requirements)
  2. Systems Administrators (able to discuss hosting and delivery/performance of Moodle LMS).
  3. Product Specialists (able to discuss the configuration and feature use for all Moodle LMS features)
  4. Account Manager and General Manager (able to discuss the features and benefits available as part of Catalyst’s suite of services and delviered to the clients of Catalyst Europe).

Moodle HQ:
What has been one of the best and memorable Moodle projects that Catalyst has worked on and supported?

Joey:
Catalyst have delivered many hundreds of Moodle based projects during our long term relationship with the platform. It is difficult to pick a favourite, whether it be the Open2Study platform in Australia which enables remote degrees to be completed, or the University of Bath project where we have seen their Moodle system perform and behave in a stable manner never before seen by university of Bath.

However, one that sticks out as exemplary is the recent migration of Coventry University to our Private cloud service. Our partership with Coventry University is blossoming with Coventry now moving additional platforms out to their private cloud managed by us. However, at it’s core, we migrated ~10 Moodle LMSs to a private AWS cloud owned by Coventrey University. At which point we have algined the codebases of these sites, managed all customisations and plugins into sub-modules and collaborate with Coventry developers and community development partners to ensure that Coventry control their own codebase roadmap.

Moodle HQ:
How can Moodlers stay in touch with news from Catalyst or find out more about your services?

First and foremost, come and say hello to us at our stand. We will be well represented by our team of experts and we like nothing more than hearing the challenges or successes you are experiencing in your Moodle platforms. Our stand will introduce you to a number of our team whom you may wish to stay in touch with, and provide you with methods to contact us if you wish.

Finally, if you are wanting to keep up to date with the goings on at Catalyst, there is a periodic newsletter in the pipeline and you can sign yourself up to receive this at our stand also.
