Can you tell us about your company and how you help your clients?
Copyleaks: We’re dedicated to creating secure environments where our users can confidently share ideas and learn. Each day the world’s largest businesses and educational institutes—along with millions of students—trust our exclusive AI-powered text analysis tool to identify potential plagiarism and paraphrasing across nearly every language, uncover AI-generated content, verify authenticity and ownership, and empower error-free writing.
Have you been to a MoodleMoot before? What were your impressions?
Copyleaks: This is the first time Copyleaks has attended MoodleMoot, and we’re looking forward to it.
How long has your company been working with Moodle?
Copyleaks: We are about to enter our fourth year of working with Moodle. In April of 2023, Copyleaks offers Moodle administrators and instructors the capability to easily and quickly detect AI-generated content from across multiple models, including GPT-4 and Bard, with 99.1% accuracy, a 0.2% false positive rate, in over ten languages, and at the sentence level, including AI text that is interspersed with content written by a human or has been paraphrased. Coupled with Copyleaks’ AI-based plagiarism and paraphrasing detection, Moodle instructors can now be even more confident knowing they have complete content integrity.
Do you have any great examples of how using Moodle has benefitted one of your clients?
Copyleaks: Through the Moodle LMS integration, our educational customers can easily see the Similarity Score, which is generated as part of the Similarity Report following a scan that informs how much potential plagiarism has been detected, allowing educators to review assignments quickly and provide crucial feedback to their students.
The Similarity Reports are used by many of our Moodle schools as a learning tool instead of a policing tool. Educators see it as an opportunity to educate students about the multiple forms of plagiarism and proper citing because, as we have learned through educators sharing with us, most student plagiarism is simply accidental.
What recent work or project would you like to highlight?
Copyleaks: The release of our AI Content Detector. Copyleaks has a technology partnership with Moodle US and a key factor in this was the explosive growth of AI chatbots, including ChatGPT and now Google Bard. Many educational institutions and enterprises worldwide are pondering how to manage and respond to AI-generated content and its broader implications, particularly in academia, where instructors often incorporate writing assessments in their curricula to assess comprehension and hone writing skills.
As with our plagiarism tool, we see AI detection as another opportunity for further education and learning between instructors and students. That is why AI detection can also be found within the Similarity Report, so educators and students can easily view detected AI content directly from the Moodle platform.
What are you most looking forward to at the global MoodleMoot in 2023?
Copyleaks: We look forward to connecting with our current customers and meeting other schools and companies that work with Moodle. Plus, we see it as a great opportunity to become more ingrained within the Moodle community and to learn how Copyleaks can better serve the people working with us.
Is there anything else that you would like to share or discuss about your company, services, or experiences?
Copyleaks: Cross-Language Detection is another feature we recently released that has been a great success with our educational institutions, especially among foreign language educators.
With the proliferation of online translators, new forms of plagiarism have emerged naturally. The most common form seen today is cross-language plagiarism, where the source content is in a different language while the plagiarised content is in another. It’s plagiarising by way of translation, using online translators. This can even happen with AI-generated content; a user can put AI text content through an online translator, such as Google Translate, to make it appear written in another language.
The Copylekas cross-language feature works by scanning for similar content in over 30 languages in addition to the language of the original document. For example, a paper in Spanish can be scanned to see if it matches results translated from another language, such as English, French, or German.
