Show me what you can do – How to illustrate to a university’s teaching staff Moodle’s features via an inspiring and useful demo course

One of the biggest challenges for academic support centers in higher education is how to show teachers, assistants and even professors the vast functionalities of Moodle. This talk will present an approach that has been used for 6 years at a technical university. An inspiring and useful demo course has been created that shows teachers all the activities, resources, integrations (such as LTI tools etc.), relevant 3rd party plugins and other useful features of the university’s Moodle installation.

This presentation will show how teachers can enroll themselves to the demo course and experience all the features from a student perspective. By gaining the students’ perspective, teachers can experience the tools from their “customer” position. Consequently, with these results and experiences, they can build better and more customized e-learning courses that fit exactly their teaching purposes.

The presentation will describe the main structure of the demo course, outline how didactic aspects are presented and how it provides practical scenarios for teachers. The presentation will also explain the process of creating the demo course. It will show the effort and workload involved in creating the course and the loops involved in maintaining it through the various Moodle releases. The described approach seems to be an internal “success story” as more than 1000 people have enrolled over the last 6 years. Particularly useful for teachers is the practical integration of all H5P elements and all quiz question types for exploration. Finally, the need for promotion of the demo course, the cross-linking to other documentation and guides, and next steps are discussed.
