As the curtains close on MoodleMoot Global 2024, we find ourselves reflecting on the past three days of deep insights, innovative breakthroughs, and the incredible sense of community that brought us all together. This year’s event has been a celebration of learning, collaboration, and the shared passion for shaping the future of education. Whether we’re educators, instructional designers, or technology enthusiasts, we all leave inspired by the possibilities that lie ahead.
Keynote: Fernando Valenzuela on Augmented Intelligence or how technological revolution meets human evolution
Presented by Fernando Valenzuela Migoya (Edlatam Alliance), a global leader in educational technology, the opening keynote Augmented Intelligence: The Technological Revolution Meets Human Evolution, set the stage for the entire Day 3 of the conference. With over 30 years of experience spanning education, finance, and technology, Fernando has driven transformative change in over 20 countries, earning recognition as the “Global Visionary of the Year” by EdTech Digest in 2022. During his keynote, Fernando guided us through how AI is reshaping the landscape of learning and work, not as a replacement for human intelligence but as a powerful tool that enhances our capabilities. He emphasised that this new era of augmented intelligence challenges us to cultivate critical thinking, creativity, and adaptability.
As AI increasingly handles routine tasks and data processing, our role, Fernando noted, shifts to interpreting data, making informed decisions, and ensuring ethical practices in the solutions we create. He highlighted that creativity will be essential in imagining new approaches, while collaboration will become even more crucial—both between humans and AI and across multidisciplinary teams. His keynote reminded us that we are not just witnesses to this evolution; we are active participants responsible for shaping how AI integrates into our educational systems and workplaces.
Breaking language barriers: AI-powered translation plugin for Moodle
One session that resonated strongly with us was the presentation on the AI-powered translation plugin for Moodle by Isaac Manzi (GIZ) and Samuel Rutunda (Digital Umuganda). This groundbreaking plugin is an essential step forward in making digital education more inclusive, especially for learners in regions where access to content in local languages is limited. By using AI to translate course materials from English to Kinyarwanda, and with plans to expand to other languages, this plugin opens new doors for millions of learners.
What struck us most was how this tool, built using the NLLB 200 model, leverages community-sourced data to enhance translation accuracy. It’s a perfect example of how open-source technology and AI can come together to break down barriers in education. As instructional designers and educators, we understand the significance of offering localised, accessible learning materials, and this plugin represents a major leap toward making that a reality. Integrating AI-driven translation tools directly within Moodle promises a more inclusive, personalised learning experience for all.
Crafting personalised learning journeys with Learning Maps
Judith Birke’s session on Crafting personalised learning journeys with Learning Maps was another highlight of the day. In an educational landscape that increasingly values personalisation, the Learning Map plugin was an invaluable tool for designing unique learning paths tailored to each student’s needs.
As Birke demonstrated, the Learning Map allows educators to create dynamic, flexible learning experiences that motivate students by giving them more control over their educational journey. The session showcased practical strategies for using this plugin to enhance student engagement, incorporating elements like gamification and real-time feedback. For those of us who design courses, the potential to personalise learning at such a granular level is exciting—Learning Maps truly offer a new way to meet the diverse needs of learners in today’s digital classrooms.
Wrapping up MoodleMoot Global 2024
As we gathered for the final session, Moodle CEO, Scott Anderberg, took us on a journey through the highlights of the past three days. From the inspiring keynote to the innovative solutions presented throughout, MoodleMoot Global 2024 was a resounding success. Anderberg’s message emphasised the power of community, reminding us that through collaboration, we can drive meaningful change in the world of education.

Looking back, it’s hard not to feel a sense of accomplishment and excitement for the future.
