MoodleMoot Global 2024 has begun! The first day brought together educators, IT professionals, L&D managers, and thought leaders from across the globe to explore how Moodle continues to shape the future of education. The day was packed with inspiring stories, from thought-provoking keynotes to informative presentations.
Let’s take a look at some of them!
Keynote: How Moodle impacts the world – Scott Anderberg (Moodle HQ)
The opening keynote from Scott Anderberg, CEO of Moodle, was a powerful reminder of how Moodle has touched the lives of millions over the past 25 years. Scott celebrated Moodle’s journey as a global platform that has empowered educators to provide learning experiences for learners around the world. Highlighting stories from educators and organisations worldwide, Scott showcased Moodle’s profound influence—from small community schools to large institutions.
But this wasn’t just a reflection on the past; it was a call to action. Scott urged us to think creatively about how we can continue using Moodle to facilitate inclusive, engaging, and innovative learning experiences. Moodle’s flexibility empowers us to make a positive impact, whether in the classroom or the workplace.
Empowering Palestinian educators: Reflections on MEC training and the integration of Moodle in Higher Education
One of the most powerful presentations of the day was from the “Equip Palestine with E-Learning (E-Pal)” project, which has been working to transform education in the country. This six-year, Norwegian-funded initiative involves 13 Palestinian universities and aims to equip faculty with the skills needed to thrive in the digital education space. The project adopted Moodle as its central learning management system (LMS), utilising the Moodle Educator Certification (MEC) program in collaboration with Eummena, Moodle’s Premium Partner in the EMEA region.
The presentation shared the success of 68 participants from 11 universities across the West Bank and Gaza who completed the MEC program, transforming their teaching practices and integrating Moodle into their courses. Many of these educators went on to mentor their colleagues, helping to guide other teachers in their transition to online learning and using Moodle’s tools to engage and empower their students.
However, this achievement did not come without hurdles. Due to the ongoing conflict, many universities in Gaza were destroyed, and the team shared the devastating news that two certified participants were killed during the attacks. This tragedy has made it difficult to transfer these valuable skills to colleagues in Gaza, and the war has posed immense challenges to continuing the work of digital transformation in the region.
Despite these obstacles, the presentation was a testament to the resilience and dedication of Palestinian educators, who have embraced Moodle as a tool for empowering their learners and improving the quality of education, even in the most difficult of circumstances. The MEC training has created a paradigm shift in teaching and learning practices, proving the vital role that technology can play in times of crisis.
BigBlueButton and the future of virtual classrooms
Fred Dixon, co-founder of BigBlueButton, took the stage to showcase the future of virtual classrooms. His presentation focused on integrating AI, analytics, and pedagogy to create more effective and interactive online learning environments. Moodle Certified Integration, BigBlueButton, is an open-source virtual classroom integrated with Moodle. It uses AI to help educators identify students who may be struggling in real time, offering instant feedback to improve learning outcomes.
Fred demonstrated how the platform’s rich analytics give educators deeper insights into student engagement, enabling more personalised learning experiences. By combining cutting-edge technology with a strong focus on pedagogy, BigBlueButton continues to enhance the effectiveness of virtual classrooms, offering exciting opportunities for educators worldwide.
Bachillerato en Línea Pilares: A unique learning experience in Mexico City
Another standout session was the presentation on the Bachillerato en Línea Pilares (BLP) program, a hybrid educational initiative developed by UNAM’s Distance Learning High School in Mexico City. Using Moodle 3.11, the program offers students the chance to engage in integrative, project-based learning and address real-world challenges in their local communities.
What makes BLP particularly innovative is its focus on “just-in-time” learning, allowing students to access resources exactly when needed. This personalised approach is further enhanced by custom plugins developed specifically for the program, minimising teacher administrative tasks and enabling more direct interaction with students. The presentation highlighted how this flexible, learner-centred model has been updated between 2023 and 2024, resulting in a more dynamic and effective learning experience for students.
Other highlights
In addition to these key sessions, the day’s schedule was filled with presentations that explored diverse topics—from workplace learning with Moodle to cutting-edge developments in educational technology. Each session gave attendees valuable insights into how Moodle can be applied in various contexts to improve educational outcomes and create more engaging learning experiences.
Conclusion
Day 1 of MoodleMoot Global 2024 showcased Moodle’s power as a force for educational innovation and transformation. From empowering educators in Palestine to revolutionising virtual classrooms with BigBlueButton, the event was brimming with inspiring stories of how Moodle is driving real change worldwide.
We eagerly look forward to everything that’s in store for Day 2!
