Interview with Kialo

Can you introduce your company and the specific solution you offer to your clients?

[Kialo Edu]: Hello from Kialo Edu! We’re delighted to see you here, and we look forward to talking more at MoodleMoot.

Kialo Edu launched in 2019 as a free online discussion platform designed to teach students how to approach issues with logic, self-reflection, and civility. Kialo improves on traditional classroom discussions by visually mapping all the different parts of an argument, offering a simple, intuitive way of organising sophisticated reasoning. Kialo’s visual layout and simultaneous contributions enable deeper understanding and encourage wider, more inclusive participation.

In a nutshell, this is how it works: Discussions develop from a central thesis, which is supported or weakened by pro and con claims directly below it. Each claim can have its own set of pros and cons, forming a structured diagram of the discussion. The end result is both visually interesting and highly informative!

What are you most looking forward to at MoodleMoot Global 2024?

[Kialo Edu]: This will be our first MoodleMoot, and we can’t wait to introduce ourselves to the Moodle community in person! As a discussion platform, it shouldn’t be a surprise that we love conversation. Having the opportunity to meet current users and to chat with anyone curious about trying us will surely be the highlight of our convention.

Why would you recommend that your clients attend MoodleMoot Global?

[Kialo Edu]: Moodle has one of the most collaborative communities of any LMS, and it’s sure to be both inspiring and enlightening to see how so many different organisations can work together to create one of the most versatile tools in education. Everyone at MoodleMoot is there because, like you, they care about making e-learning the very best it can be for teachers and students. There’s nowhere better to make connections and build partnerships!

How long has your company been working with Moodle?

[Kialo Edu]: We really are one of the new kids on the block. Kialo Edu launched its custom Moodle plugin in late 2023.

Is there any recent work or project from your company that you would like to highlight?

[Kialo Edu]: This year we’re very excited to be launching a new Small Group Mode on Kialo Edu! This will streamline teachers’ ability to get the benefits of small group discussions on our platform, as you can easily make groups and give each their own copy of a discussion to work on. But even better than oral small group discussions, where teachers can only monitor one group at a time, Kialo’s written format lets teachers see everything that students contributed! With Small Group Mode, we’re taking one of our favourite classroom activities and giving it some upgrades.

Are there any additional insights or upcoming trends in e-learning that you would like to discuss?

[Kialo Edu]: While there is a proliferation of high-quality e-learning tools for teaching content, the industry has paid relatively little attention to developing tools that help teachers work with student thinking. Especially as AI threatens to do more and more of students’ thinking for them, we believe that tools designed to train critical thinking will become an extremely important part of the edtech landscape. We hope to be on the forefront of that movement.

How can people contact you for more information if they would like to know more about your company and services?

[Kialo Edu]: We’d love to hear from you! You can drop us a line at https://support.kialo-edu.com/en/contact/, or you can reach out on either Facebook or X.
