Bachillerato en Línea Pilares: A Different Experience

In 2017, the Secretaría de Educación, Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación (SECTEI) of Mexico City tasked the academic group of UNAM’s Distance Learning High School with the creation of a hybrid educational program known as Bachillerato en Línea Pilares (BLP). This curriculum is based on the philosophy of using, creating, and reusing open educational resources, utilizing actually the Moodle platform version 3.11 for course implementation.

The program stands out for its practical approach, where students demonstrate their learning through integrative projects that address specific issues in their environment. This method allows them to understand and contribute to solving the challenges of their city. Additionally, it promotes “just-in-time” learning, where students explore resources exactly when they need them. The information generated from their performance in quizzes and preliminary assignments allows for personalized adjustments to optimize the learning experience. To ensure continuous progression in the educational process, specific plugins have been developed to facilitate the delivery of activities not natively available or through H5P elements. These plugins also allow direct access to online materials without needing to navigate the main platform page and check activity restrictions before loading the next learning content.

The online materials are designed to minimize the number of exams and assignments that advisors need to review and grade. The importance of the integrative project has led to most of the teaching focus being on personalized guidance in this area. Since 2019, the BLP has offered a distinct educational experience tailored to the needs and contexts of the students, and between 2023 and 2024, it underwent an update process that has improved this experience.
