Class discussions are a keystone of inquiry-based education, but their benefits are often constrained by the classroom environment. The most extravert, confident students tend to dominate, while shyer students struggle. And with only one speaker at a time, it’s almost impossible to let everyone voice all their thoughts, leading some students to simply tune out.
Digital argument-mapping tools are built to visually map all the different parts of a discussion, offering students a simple, intuitive way of organizing sophisticated reasoning. Using this proven basis for thoughtful discourse, Kialo Edu designed an argument-mapping Moodle plugin that would also address the challenges around engagement and inclusivity in class discussions.
