Moodle Transformed: Building a Collaborative Knowledge Hub – The FOS Feminista experience

Fòs Feminista is an intersectional feminist organization, champions sexual and reproductive health and rights for women, girls, and gender-diverse people. Their mission thrives on knowledge sharing and capacity building through education.

In 2023, FOS Feminista decided to use Moodle as its knowledge platform, so member organisations could access topics of local and global interest, internal policy documents, intersectoral work standards, and a myriad of other tools quickly, securely, and effectively. Partnering with Knowtechture.com, Moodle was set up with independent, isolated “Collaboration Spaces” by using Moodle’s course categories. Each space has its own theme and specific user cohorts, enabling focused and secured knowledge creation and sharing.

Additionally, a custom Database plugin enables a centralized activity for each space to manage documents collaboratively. The custom Database activity plugin included features like automatic translation, for ensuring wider accessibility of the uploaded materials.

Achievements

Fòs Feminista launched the Collaboration Moodle Platform with 20+ partner organizations in early 2024. This number is expected to increase as they continue to promote the platform, for both the Knowledge Sharing hub and as an educational resource.

Key Takeaways

Moodle can be used by non-educational organisations as a Knowledge Sharing platform by repurposing some of its concepts and ensuring the segregation between departments and functions that a non-educational organisation seeks. Doing these customizations responsibly means that the design should ensure that the platform is upgradable, and that the modifications are packed as plug-ins, so the base Moodle app can be upgraded.
